Match Report: Ten-man VCF Mestalla held to late draw away at Peña Deportiva (1-1)

Valencia CF Mestalla visited SCR Peña Deportiva on Sunday 24th of January at Santa Eulália Municipal ground on matchday 11 in group III B of Segunda B.

The match finished in a 1-1 draw in a meeting where the b team came tantalisingly close to winning it despite being a man down for the remaining half an hour for the Hugo González sending off.

José David gave Valencia CF Mestalla the breakthrough converting a spot-kick. Valencia CF Mestalla managed to hold out but a late equaliser meant that the points were shared.

Valencia CF Mestalla came into the game with a long list of absentees with the latest to join it in the manner of their leading goalscorer Fran Navarro.

Óscar Fernández tweaked the shape with Emaná as the main man up top and a congested midfield Adri Gómez, F. García and Pedro Alemañ.

It was a heavily poised match right from the off with Valencia CF trying to probe down the channels with William de Camargo on the right-hand side and Hugo González on the right-hand side with Jesús Vázquez overlapping runs.

A Cruz foray forward got past the solid defence in the early goings of the game but Unai was equal to it and knocked it behind for a corner kick. VCF Mestalla responded at the other end through Facu García whose shot blazed over the bar and Emaná who nearly caught out Seral.

Both sides kicked up a gear in the second half with further forays forward at either end with VCF Mestalla looking to hit on the counter-attack and Peña Deportiva dictating play.  

The momentum seemingly swung in Peña Deportiva’s favour after Hugo González was sent off for a straight red card offense following a coming-together with an opposition player which meant that had to play with ten men for the remaining half an hour.

A brilliant solo move won Valencia CF Mestalla a spot-kick. José David stepped up and converted it to put VCF Mestalla with little under 20 minutes plus stoppage time left to play.

Valencia CF Mestalla tried to protect their slender lead with ten men. Alas, Pau Pomar denied Valencia CF Mestalla a much needed win with an 87th minute equaliser as the spoils were shared.
